Professor Dame Angela McLean, Chief Scientific Adviser, Government Office for Science

In conversation with Angela McLean

In an increasingly complex and risky world, the application of science to policymaking has never been more important. From health to national security, and in our responsiveness to the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence and the transition to Net Zero, the UK's future prosperity depends on developing a deep understanding of the challenges we face and innovating to find new solutions to overcome them. Bringing together scientific disciplines to successfully navigate uncertainty is vital.

To achieve this, science – in the broadest sense – must be embedded in how Whitehall works and all departments must be applying scientific knowledge and insights across their portfolios. This means reviewing the skills, governance and policymaking process in Whitehall to ensure government is equipped with mature science systems that are properly utilised by decision-makers.

Re:State is thrilled to be hosting Professor Dame Angela McClean to share her reflections on how government can further improve its use of science – moving it from ‘nice to have’ in some instances, to ‘unthinkable not to use’ in all cases.
