A year after COVID-19 first shook the economy, the way out of the pandemic is finally in sight. The hard work of recovery must now begin. However, while the country is slowly emerging from lockdown, the events of the past 12 months will cast a long shadow – GDP is almost 10% smaller and unemployment is projected to continue rising through 2021. A plan is needed to boost growth and urgently create jobs. At the same time, the public finances will, at some point, have to be put back in balance. There is also an opportunity to think again about the social contract between the State, individuals and businesses in order to build back a fairer economy.

We were delighted to be joined by the Shadow Chancellor to discuss these issues and Labour’s thinking on how to achieve a sustainable economic recovery.
