Levelling up: from ambition to reality

It is clear that as we move to recovery, the Government has lost none of its ambition for ‘levelling up’ the UK. The Treasury’s Build Back Better: A Plan for Growth stated that “the primary objective” is to ensure no region is left behind in the UK’s post pandemic recovery, while the Prime Minister’s new Levelling Up Unit will provide focus for reform.

From digital and physical infrastructure to skills and R&D, the Government is investing heavily to achieve this ambition. To make the most of this funding, the public sector must have a clear plan, and the right levers at central and local government, to spread opportunity and prosperity across the whole country – and be clear how success will be measured. This roundtable will examine the steps the Government will need to take to turn levelling up from an ambition, to reality.
