National security is the first duty of government, and the 2023 Integrated Review refresh identified how a new era of systemic competition is now playing out in strategic arenas, often below the threshold of armed conflict. In particular, rapid advances in the capability and availability of Artificial Intelligence are providing adversaries with new opportunities to threaten the UK and our allies, and opportunities for the government to improve our own defences.
As technological competition in AI accelerates, the UK needs to choose the type of advantage and level of autonomy it wants to have in AI to support our national security system. And that can’t be decided in isolation from the wider role AI should play in our economy and science and technology ecosystem – building on global agreements at the AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park.
Re:State is delighted to welcome Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein CBE, President, City, University of London, and former, Chief Scientific Advisor, National Security, to lead this private, partners-only roundtable to discuss how government can use AI with regards to national security.
This private roundtable will be held in-person and will take place under the Chatham House rule.
