An exemplar of innovation: life sciences for economic growth

The life sciences epitomise the UK’s strengths in research and innovation and are already one of our most successful sectors – worth nearly £100 billion annually and employing over 280,000 people. When the life sciences sector succeeds, so too does the UK: reflected in recent decisions by companies such as AstraZeneca and Moderna to double down on expanding their domestic manufacturing base, creating thousands of new jobs. 

The Life Sciences Vision stressed the inseparable nature of R&D, government and industry collaboration, while the Autumn Statement recognised the life sciences as one of five “growth sectors of the future”. However, there is still further to go to realise this potential and ensure the UK does not lose ground in a fiercely competitive international market. 

Investing in high-quality, joined-up datasets, supporting the delivery of smarter and more inclusive clinical trials, and ensuring regulators have the capacity and capability to accelerate the uptake of new medicines and technologies, will all be key. As will increasing access to patient capital to ensure innovative start-ups and research clusters have the long-term resources needed to finance growth.
