Al on the frontline: better decision-making

Public servants make vital decisions about the lives of citizens every day. On the frontline, caseworkers need to make those decisions quickly, effectively and fairly based on accurate information. But too often the information they need is held in siloes, requires mundane and repeatable processes to access, or key insights are missed due to the volume of case notes and data points.

Aggregating that data by automating retrieval and summarisation is a task which AI can do effectively, enabling the humans in the process to spend their time most productively on the key decisions. When decisions affect peoples’ lives, understanding the potential bias and inaccuracy involved in using AI is key, but AI can also identify patterns or information that human processing can miss. Public services can also realise significant productivity gains by segmenting cohorts and prioritising cases for specialist decision-makers, based on classification of cases which machine-learning algorithms can deliver.

Re:State is delighted to welcome Richard Corbridge, Director General, Chief Digital & Information Officer, Department for Work & Pensions, to examine how public services can embed AI as a support tool in decision-making, and the measures which leaders in Whitehall and frontline services will need to take if they are to deploy it effectively.

This is a private roundtable which will be held under the Chatham House rule and is kindly supported by Newton Europe.
