Justice served: building a modern system

The justice system remains under immense pressure, with pandemic-induced backlogs continuing to impact the delivery of justice, and a prison system that is at crisis point. However, the new Government have been clear in their commitment to longer term reform to put the system back on a stable footing, including launching an independent, bi-partisan review of sentencing.

The Ministry of Justice has also been at the forefront of deploying new technologies to improve services and boost productivity, and there remains significant scope to go further. Balancing efficiency and access will remain key, and as technological opportunities develop, transparent debate will be required on the implications for the legal profession and those who rely on it.

At the same time, there are important questions about how to ensure the justice system is fit for the modern world, acting in the public interest, while not overreaching: court time must be used to greatest effect, and alternative solutions deployed where appropriate.

Re:State is delighted to welcome Jerome Glass, Director General, Policy and Strategy Group, Ministry of Justice, to join us to set out his thinking on the challenges and opportunities ahead.

This private partners-only dinner will be held in-person and will take place under the Chatham House rule.
