Making spending count: higher productivity for better outcomes

With public debt now at over 100 per cent of GDP, and historic pressures on public spending set to the continue, the need to maximise the impact of every pound could not be more pressing. This means, across government, an ability to accurately account for and benchmark the spending of frontline service providers, but also ensuring that government is delivering results that are felt by the public, and for taxpayers, justify a tax burden that at its highest in over 40 years.

At the same time, public service sector productivity has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels despite the fact that real progress could be made by getting the basics right: whether through cutting unnecessary bureaucracy to free up staff time, or effectively deploying technology to automate outdated and paper-based processes. There should be a clear strategy to eliminate or redesign wasteful practices, and to ensure every pound spent is linked to driving better outcomes for citizens.
