The State of the State 2017-18

The ‘State of the State’ report produced by Deloitte, in conjunction with Re:State, provides a unique, independent analysis of the UK public sector. This year’s report finds that the UK political landscape has changed irrevocably. In addition to Brexit significant challenges are arising from a wide range of issues including the impact of digital technology on the nature of crime, increased pressure on services driven by an ageing population and a very high level of demand for social care funding. It is these issues, and not Brexit, which cause our public sector leaders greatest concern.

As the government begins thinking about reshaping the UK economy in a post-Brexit era, how can these issues be addressed in a way which creates a long-term framework for sustainable and effective public services? The session explored this fundamental question, and some of the findings and key questions arising from our citizen survey and discussions with public sector leaders.

It was lead by Rebecca George OBE, Deloitte UK Public Sector Leader, who was joined on the panel by Bernard Jenkin MP, Chairman of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee, Andrew Haldenby, Director of Reform, Sir Howard Bernstein, former Chief Executive of Manchester City Council and Matt Warman MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport.

Attendees included senior policy-makers, public service leaders and business leaders, who had an opportunity to ask the panel questions. It was held under the Chatham House Rule.
