Change in numbers of pubs and bars

This map shows the change in numbers of pubs and bars in neighbourhoods over the last decade, revealing a complex picture across the capital. Areas of particularly large increases or decreases are highlighted on the map.

With the appointment of London’s first Night Czar last year, London’s night-time economy has been placed centre-stage. The city’s night-time businesses face significant challenges: there has been an overall decline of pubs and bars across London – a net loss of 790 in the decade to 2016 – although some areas have seen increases. The fall is thought to be the result of a combination of factors, including a more diverse population eschewing pubs and people changing their patterns of when and where they drink.
