Today we are launching a new stage in our research with our 'Changing demand for hospital care' survey. We want to hear from anyone who works in an English hospital about how changing patient demand changes your job day-to-day. Read on for more information.

Hospital care is in a state of fundamental crisis. Reform’s ‘Hospital of the Future’ project, launched in December with our framing paper, seeks to outline a practical vision for future hospitals within a system reorientated towards prevention and early intervention.

There are several major trends that precipitate a radically different approach to hospital care, as we outlined in our framing paper. But chiefly, a key challenge is that clinical demand is growing both in volume and complexity. These trends are not only set to continue but to worsen.

This changing demand is largely caused by:

  1. Increasing numbers of patients with multiple long term conditions, known as multimorbidity
  2. An ageing population, resulting in increasing numbers of older people requiring admission to hospital or long term care

For the ‘Hospital of the Future’ project we want to understand how this changing demand shifts how care is delivered on the ground in hospitals, as well as how effectively hospitals are responding. Do patients need more attention from multiple specialists in order to decide their treatment plan? Does communication with patients need to be different? Does it change the decision making around treatment?

Understanding this will help us make recommendations to policymakers in Government and in the NHS, to help create the ‘Hospital of the Future’.

We have therefore created a survey for staff working in hospitals to feedback their views. This survey may be completed by anyone working in a hospital, in any capacity, and is completely anonymous. It should take no longer than 5-10 minutes to complete.

We want to hear from you and really value your insights. We would also greatly appreciate you sharing this survey with your hospital or secondary care networks, if possible.

We are extremely grateful for your response and/or sharing the survey with your networks — thank you!
